A deck planned around your home
A deck needs to work with the way you use the house and garden. The route from the back door, room for outdoor furniture and the connection to lawn or paths all influence the layout.
We design and build custom decks as individual projects or as part of a complete landscape. Start with what you want the space to do, then we can discuss its position, size and materials.
Southern Craft Landscapes is based in Busselton and works with homeowners in Dunsborough, Bunbury and across the South West.
Timber or composite decking?
Timber decking
Timber is an option if you prefer the appearance of natural timber in your outdoor space. We can discuss the finish you have in mind and how the material works with the rest of the project. Ask about the care required for the particular timber and finish before deciding.
Composite decking
Composite decking provides another material option, with the appearance and care requirements depending on the selected product. We can discuss the look you want and the options appropriate for the project. Specific products, colours and finishes will be confirmed as part of the scope.
The decision involves more than the colour of a board. Consider the setting, the amount of direct sun, the way you’ll use the deck and the upkeep you’re comfortable with. No product is assumed to suit every site.
Plan the space before choosing the finish
A useful starting brief answers a few practical questions:
Is the deck mainly for dining, relaxing or a mix of both?
How much room do you need for furniture and moving around it?
Where should it connect to the house and garden?
What is already in the proposed area?
Are you keeping or changing the surrounding lawn, paths and beds?
Is there a narrow gate or other access limit to consider?
If you have a sketch, a site plan or reference photos, let us know. These can help explain the size and style you have in mind without requiring a finished design before the first conversation.
Bring the deck into the wider landscape
A deck can be the starting point for an outdoor area, or one part of a larger yard transformation. Planning the surrounding space at the same time helps decide where paths, lawn and garden beds should meet it.
If reticulation or other landscaping work is also required, mention it early. Your quote can define the individual elements and their relationship to the deck rather than leaving the surrounding area unresolved.
From enquiry to construction
1. Tell us what you have in mind
Use the enquiry form to share your location, approximate size and the main purpose of the deck. Include any preferred materials and let us know whether you have plans or photos.
2. Discuss the site and layout
We’ll talk through the space, access, material options and how the deck fits the home and garden. Any project-specific requirements need to be understood before the scope is agreed.
3. Confirm the work
The quote will set out the proposed work and materials. Clarify any approvals or other professional input the project needs, and who will arrange them, before construction begins.
4. Build the agreed deck
Construction follows the confirmed scope and timing. If it’s part of a wider landscape, the deck and surrounding work need to be sequenced together.
What affects decking costs?
The deck’s size, shape and construction requirements influence the work involved, along with the chosen material and finish. Existing structures or surfaces, site access and the surrounding landscaping also affect the scope.
A simple outline of the space and how you want to use it is enough to start a conversation. We provide free, no-obligation quotes for the proposed project.
Tell Tom about the deck you’re planning
Use the enquiry form to share your location, the space you have and how you’d like to use it. Mention any photos, plans or preferred materials so we can discuss the next steps.
Do you offer both timber and composite decks?
Yes. Both are part of our decking offering. We’ll discuss the options for your project and confirm the particular material and finish in the quote.
Do I need a complete design before enquiring?
No. We design and build custom decks. Bring your ideas, approximate dimensions and any references you like. If you already have a plan, tell us which parts of the project you want quoted.
Can you include the deck in a full backyard project?
Yes. We offer complete landscaping as well as individual deck projects. We can discuss how the deck will connect with lawn, garden beds, paths and other outdoor areas.
Will my deck need approval?
Approval requirements depend on the proposal and property. Confirm what’s needed with the relevant local authority before construction, and agree who is responsible for the applications. Start with the City of Busselton’s planning guidance or the City of Bunbury’s building guidance, as applicable to your property.
How long will the build take?
Timing depends on the agreed design, site conditions, materials and any approvals or other work involved. We’ll discuss the project’s timing before work starts rather than promise a fixed duration for every deck.
Can I enquire about a deck in Bunbury?
Yes. We welcome Bunbury decking enquiries alongside our work in Busselton and Dunsborough. Send the location and a brief description of the project. Read more about our Bunbury landscaping services.
